All You Wanted to Know About Cosmetic Dentistry and Teeth Whitening Products
Our teeth go through a lot of wear and tear with the passage of time. Bad breathe, bleeding gum, and yellowing teeth are just a few example of common teeth problem. A shinning bright smile makes us look better and healthier. Therefore, more and more people are becoming aware of cosmetic dentistry and teeth whitening products.
Dentistry has a specialized branch, which takes care of the look of the teeth known as cosmetic dentistry. It helps us to acquire sparkling smile and can correct major flaws that our teeth may have. A cosmetic dentist’s first job is to ensure the health of your teeth. Only then he or she will proceed with the teeth whitening process.
Teeth whitening is a part of cosmetic dentistry. It eliminates the stains you get from smoking, drinking tea, coffee, cola, red wine, or from antibiotics. There are many teeth whitening products available over the counter. Before going in for these ready-to-use products, it is important that you consult your dentist.
The most common teeth whitening products available are
1) Toothpaste: It is the most popular and commonly used teeth whitening product to keep teeth white. In terms of cosmetic dentistry it is not really teeth whitening product but, nonetheless, it helps in maintaining the teeth whiteness after a professional dentistry session.
2) Teeth whitening Gel: Another teeth whitening product used in cosmetic dentistry is white paste or gel, which is applied over the teeth. A protective cover is put on the gums so that the peroxide present in the formulation does not harm the gums. The active ingredients of the gel break down to release oxygen. It penetrates the tooth enamel and whitens the teeth. This is also known as gel bleaching. This can done at home. One can purchase the whole kit from the pharmacy. The gel is spread on a mouth tray and placed over the teeth. A number of companies manufacture this product. For example you can buy ‘35% Carbamide Peroxide teeth Whitening Kit’ from a shop for $29.95.
3) Laser Teeth Whitening Technique: In this teeth whitening product laser light or plasma arc light source is used to whiten the teeth. First, a gel is spread on the teeth similar to that of bleaching gel but a little thicker. Then the light is pointed over the gel. The heat helps to breakdown the active ingredients. Then the gel penetrates the enamel and removes the stains. This is one-time procedure and teeth become visibly brighter after two to three exposures. Though laser technique products are available in the shops like36% Carbamide Peroxide Blue Light Gel System that costs only $49.99, it is advisable to get the treatment done under the supervision of a cosmetic dentist. This procedure is costly but much safe.
In cosmetic dentistry there are other options like bonding and veneering where dentists put porcelain chips to hide the stains. You can choose any of the above products depending on your problems. Your dentist is the best person to guide you in this regard.

Have a Modern Lifestyle With Cosmetic Dentistry
“Smile!” A simple pep talk can make us feel uncomfortable and embarrassed. Stains, spots, uneven teeth, gaps, cavities or cracks can seem a nightmare in a society that requires more and more smiles. Well, smile! Cosmetic Dentistry is here to help. Teeth whitening, porcelain dental veneers, laser bleaching, braces and bridges… they are all solutions to your problems.
Research in cosmetic dentistry allows us today to have the “perfect smile”. Teeth whitening is probably the easiest way. Peroxide based materials are usually used in order to achieve bright, attractive smiles. How does cosmetic dentistry work in this case? Well, dentists have been trying to answer this dilemma for the past 10 years and they have come up with two possible solutions to the problem: in-office teeth whitening and at-home treatment. What is this all about anyway?
Let’s see…the in-office teeth whitening method resides in your dentist making molds of the teeth, forward them to a laboratory and in a period of just one week get your made-to-order mouthpiece back. After that, you would just have to stay for a couple of endless hours with your new plastic teeth whitening molds cemented in peroxide on your discomforted gums. And this wouldn’t be all, of course… After a week of annoying appointments with your dentist, you would have to pay to cover all charges. Well, some would call that a crisis! But do not worry! Your dentist can come up with other cosmetic dentistry procedures to get your teeth whiter. One of them would be an in-office brief process called Laser Bleaching (known as well as Power Bleaching or Argon Bleaching). This teeth whitening high-tech method consists of a one-time application of a concentrated peroxide gel which will be let to dry for an hour. Afterwards, the dried peroxide mixture would be heated with a laser beam (generally argon) to complete the cosmetic dentistry process.
Until a few years ago, home teeth whitening wasn’t a real option for the majority of people as cosmetic dentistry prices were too high. Nowadays, money isn’t an issue anymore. There are two practical opportunities available on the cosmetic dentistry market to satisfy everyone’s needs.
The first one is the brush-on teeth whitening method. It was designed for people with busy lifestyles who didn’t have time for an elaborate cosmetic dentistry treatment. All they wanted was to get over their teeth whitening procedure as fast as possible. And now, you can as well. You just have to cover your teeth in the special overnight formula and voila… your teeth whitening problems are completely over. Sounds fair, doesn’t it? There are just two small flaws. The first one is the possibility that you will wet your special formula with too much saliva and you’ll rub it off. The second one refers to the alcohol content of the teeth whitening formula which might give you a bad breath. This would be an unfortunate case as there have been just a few isolated throughout all cosmetic dentistry history. Moreover, the teeth whitening formula contains a special breath-mint ingredient that will surely solve your bad breath problem. Apart from these two issues, one can’t argue that the special overnight teeth whitening formula represents one of the best treatments offered, for now, by modern cosmetic dentistry.
The second home teeth whitening solution is the whitening strips method created recently by cosmetic dentistry specialists. These strips that are applied on your teeth commonly compose from an upper strip and a lower strip that are both pushed against the outside surface of your gums. Of course this not-so-scientific cosmetic dentistry process causes stains and blotches of whiter or darker regions on teeth. This teeth whitening problem occurs as your teeth aren’t perfectly flat. They have recesses and ridges. That’s why this last teeth whitening procedure isn’t so popular. No cosmetic dentistry expert recommends it.
In the end, cosmetic dentistry remains a highly debated issue. Even if it is generally admitted that there are a series of disadvantages to all these procedures, cosmetic dentistry and especially teeth whitening methods can be the answer to many problems. As long as a smile can bring more success than anything else, cosmetic dentistry has a bright future ahead. Therefore, look on the bright side of things and “smile!”

Cosmetic Dentistry to Improve Teeth Color
The color of your teeth is very important for a perfect smile which shows your confidence. But there are several reasons that may cause your teeth color to change. The discoloration of your teeth may be due to staining, chemical damage caused, or aging. Coffee, tea, medications, or cigarettes are few of the most common factors that discolor your teeth. People with habits of drinking lots of cola or soft drinks are also prone to discoloration of their teeth. Cosmetic dentistry procedures however can renew the teeth color and rectify major dental flaws.
Besides staining there are some other factors that can influence your teeth color. Genes, for example, can influence the teeth color. Genetic influence may lead some people to have brighter enamel compared to others. A person may lose teeth color because of some disease also. If you fill that due to some underlying medical reason your teeth are getting discolored, you should immediately take help of cosmetic dentistry.
There is no standard system available in dentistry to estimate or determine your teeth color. Some shade guides are available which differentiate the teeth color into basic four shades like reddish brown, reddish yellow, gray, and reddish gray. ‘Reddish brown’ range has five stages of darkness while reddish yellow, gray, and reddish gray have four stages.
All your teeth may not be of the same natural color. Normally your eye teeth are likely to be darker than your other teeth. The whitest teeth are your front teeth. The molars are likely to have a shade between these two.
There is no single right process to make your teeth whiter. Some people desire an immediate and remarkable change, while there are others who intend to have measured whitening with cosmetic dentistry process. The final results may vary according to the natural color of your teeth. The choice of treatment or the stubborn stains also influence your teeth color.
Many cosmetic dentistry experts claim that teeth whitening procedures lead to change in teeth color to even more than nine shades, however, change of two or three shades would make a significant difference in anybody’s denture. Each cosmetic dentistry procedure has its own advantages and disadvantages. The costs also differ according to the procedure.
The traditional dentistry improves your oral hygiene, diagnoses the oral diseases, and makes treatment accordingly. But cosmetic dentistry helps to improve the look of your teeth, smile, and mouth. Unlike traditional dentistry, cosmetic dentistry offers elective treatments for your teeth. Cosmetic dentistry provides you the restorative benefits also. Dental fillings are very common process for treating the decayed teeth. The invention of composite materials or porcelain has made dental fillings closely match the natural teeth color unlike the previously used materials like amalgam or gold or silver.
The technological developments in tooth-colored materials have made the recent cosmetic dentistry more predictable and durable. Moreover, nowadays the dentists are offering more conservative cosmetic dentistry treatment options which preserve most of the normal tooth structure. Such facilities make cosmetic treatments like smile makeovers more convenient for the patients and also helps to reduce recovery time.

Cosmetic Dentistry: Today’s Necessity
It is said that the smile is the beauty of a face and the mirror of the mind. Therefore, to enhance ones smile, you must read some good cosmetic dentistry articles. This treatment is quite expensive and includes teeth whitening, tooth veneering, tooth implants, dental crowns, reshaping dental bonding, dentures, root canal etc.
Cosmetic dentistry articles will tell you that it has much more to offer than just to enhancing and beautifying the smile. Firstly, this is dentistry and is concerned with improving the health of the teeth. Reading Cosmetic dentistry articles becomes mandatory before deciding on the treatment. The fast and junk food, cold and hard drinks, chocolates, coffee, and cigarettes that has become a part of our daily diet, contains harmful chemicals and causes immense damage to the enamel which is the protective covering of the teeth. This therefore affects the health and quality of the teeth and gum. Although cosmetic dentistry is performed by professional dentists, it is not completely a zero risk procedure.
You will find many useful cosmetic dentistry articles on teeth whitening and other procedures. In this treatment, one’s teeth are bleached in a cosmetic manner to remove or lighten the stains on the enamel. The advantage of teeth whitening is that it enhances self-confidence, makes one look more attractive and appealing, provides a winning smile, and reduces insecurity. It also has disadvantages. Teeth whitening methods are not recommended for pregnant and lactating women, children below sixteen, and for people with sensitive teeth and gums. Moreover, dental bleaching does not yield permanent results and are not always as effective as people expect them to be.
Laser teeth whitening procedure, also known as laser bleaching, is a new procedure. Many websites have loads of cosmetic dentistry articles on laser bleaching. A translucent bleaching peroxide gel is applied on the teeth and laser argon light is used to activate the crystals in the gel. In turn the gel penetrates through the enamel making the teeth brighter. But if the gel is swallowed or if it seeps into the gum it might be dangerous.
Cosmetic dentistry articles on teeth veneer are also widely available. It is used to concealing the gaps between teeth and even for whitening. Veneers are ultra thin laminate fixing on the tooth, made of porcelain or plastic cement.
To replace a missing tooth, the most viable procedure is cosmetic implant dentistry. This is a resilient process and can last a life time.
Cosmetic dentistry articles describe the process of bonding that helps to reshape and repair teeth. This is a composite resin light sensitive, and natural colored filling used for filling the cavities, cracks, gaps, and other flaws.
You will find many cosmetic dentistry articles discussing some treatments procedures for children that are known as pediatric cosmetic dentistry. This uses dental sealants that protect children’s teeth from decaying.
Braces are common products and cosmetic dentistry articles describe every aspect of the process. Crowns or ‘caps’ are artificial coverings that mounts on prepared tooth to give it a normal shape. Crowns are best for broken and decaying tooth.
cosmetic dentistry articles on gum surgery tell you about the process in detail. It is done with the help of laser and decaying gum tissues are grated.

Cosmetic Dentistry
The possibility for cosmetic dentistry began quite recently. Cosmetic dentistry is the oral treatment to improve dental health as well as to improve the facial appearance of a person. With the increasing importance of media the number of celebrities opting for such treatments nowadays is widely known. Yet even for those of us who are not so much in the limelight, cosmetic dentistry can help someone considerably by adding to his or her confidence and self-esteem. The makeover and reality shows on television have increased everyone’s awareness about what cosmetic dentistry is and how to access it.
Cosmetic dentistry has different categories for specific problems concerning the teeth. The main treatments in cosmetic dentistry involve, but are not limited to:
- Teeth whitening
Otherwise known as tooth bleaching, tooth whitening is a quite common procedure today. Here, discoloured or stained teeth are brightened and are made to look whiter.
- Veneers
Applying dental veneers is the procedure for transforming teeth that are worn out, crooked or damaged. Veneers are thin shells or laminates that are tooth coloured. They are attached to the front side of teeth to improve their appearance.
- Crowns
Crowns are meant for teeth that are cracked or broken down. Crowns are applied right on top of the existing teeth, thus the name “crown”. Dental crowns increase the functionality of the weakened teeth by fortifying them. Crowns are made of either gold or porcelain. Tooth coloured porcelain is better for a natural appearance.
- Contouring
Contouring is the procedure for correcting teeth that are crooked, chipped, cracked or overlapping. Contouring is the part of cosmetic dentistry that alters the length, shape or even position of the teeth.
- Gum reshaping
Gum reshaping involves the reshaping of the tissue underlying bones to give the impression of symmetrical or longer teeth. The gum line is raised or sculpted here by removing the extra gum using a scalpel or laser device. Gum reshaping is mainly to remove gums that cover too much of the teeth making them look short.
- Dental bridges
Applying dental bridges involves false teeth, also known as pontic, that are filled in the area where teeth are missing. In this category of cosmetic dentistry the false teeth is kept in place by the two crowns on the both sides of the false tooth. The dental bridges are necessary not just to improve the appearance but also to prevent gum diseases and reduce the strain on the neighbouring teeth.
Cosmetic dentistry is widely known to be quite expensive. However, the cost depends on a variety of factors:
- Place where the dentistry is done
- Materials used in the treatment
- Experience and qualifications of the doctor
Another factor you need to take care of is that there are some procedures in cosmetic dentistry that are risky and need special attention and care. Hence, it is important to get your required dentistry done in a place of first-rate quality. After all, cosmetic dentistry is not simply a matter of dental health but is also concerned with appearance changes that can affect your confidence and relationships. Make sure that you take time to choose your cosmetic dentist carefully.

Cosmetic dentistry articles will tell you that veneers are thin porcelain slices and are specially made to fit on the visible exterior of the front teeth. Veneers are the perfect way to treat discolored teeth. The veneers are also used for closing the gaps between the two front teeth matching the teeth color or for the repair of cracks and chips.
You will also find cosmetic dentistry articles on white filling which is the most popular substitute of amalgam fillings. The white filling materials ensure that your tooth has the perfect match of its natural shade. After successful cosmetic dentistry procedures it becomes almost impossible to differentiate the color of the filling from the teeth color. Sometimes, white fillings are used to cover up the bad marks of your teeth.
Cosmetic dentistry provides treatments for badly broken tooth and you may find some interesting cosmetic dentistry articles on Crowns. Cap or crowns are used to restore the strength and appearance of an unevenly broken tooth. The crowns can be made of various materials like porcelain or with gold.

You can go through cosmetic dentistry articles to know about them before you opt for one particular procedure.
There are quite a few cosmetic dentistry articles on bridges as well. Bridges are great for those who do not prefer dentures or have just one or two missing teeth. The bridges are made of costly metal amalgamated to porcelain. Adhesive bridges are also available where drilling is not required to set the bridge. Such bridges are prepared with false tooth with wings made of metals on the either side. The wings fit with the either side of teeth with minimum drilling. A strong composite resin sets the bridges on previously roughened teeth.
In tooth implants titanium rods are surgically set into the jawbone which function as anchors to fasten the crowns or dentures.
Teeth whitening are cosmetic dentistry process that does not require removal of teeth surfaces. Professional bleaching is mostly used for whitening the teeth color. Power whitening or laser whitening is another method used for tooth whitening.

Orthodontics as a Part of Cosmetic Dentistry
Cosmetic dentistry is a treatment that we take up when we want to have beautiful and flawless white teeth. It treats discolored and fractured teeth and can rectify major defects. Methods used by cosmetic dentistry are teeth whitening, bonding, veneers, tooth colored filling, etc. To get that perfect set of white teeth you first need to get your teeth straightened. Cosmetic dentistry can be successful only after successful orthodontics procedures.
Orthodontics is that part of dentistry which deals with common dental irregularities. People may have problems regarding the positioning of their teeth. One can have gaps between the teeth, overcrowding, protruding teeth, crooked teeth, a deep overbite (when upper jaw overlaps the lower jaw too vertically), or may even have chewing problems. Gaps between the teeth can be too much at times or teeth may be positioned so close together that it becomes difficult to chew properly. Orthodontics takes care of all these problems by repositioning your teeth. It is only after this cosmetic dentistry takes over to present you the perfect smile.
It is advisable to realign your teeth or jaw as early as possible. Ideally it should be rectified during teen years. But going for orthodontics in the later years is not much of a problem. The orthodontists use various simple or sophisticated equipments depending on the extent of the irregularities. It depends on the amount of repositioning one needs. Braces are often required as a part of cosmetic dentistry. They help the patient to straighten their teeth and help in shaping the jaw. Once the repositioning is done by the orthodontics one can go in for bonding, veneering, or teeth bleaching.
When the teeth are not in a healthy state problem arises in cosmetic dentistry. Tooth decay is a common problem faced by cosmetic dentistry. When the teeth are overcrowded some teeth are positioned over the others. To bleach the teeth properly they must have a close normal shape. Otherwise, during the whitening process the teeth underneath the other will not get bleached properly. This way the patient will not get satisfactory result.
In case you are doing the whitening procedure at home it becomes even more dangerous. The gel has to be spread on the mouth tray and has to be fitted on your teeth properly. In case you have crooked teeth the tray will not fit and gel may leak to other portion of the mouth and harm you.
Before you take up cosmetic dentistry you must visit an orthodontist’s office. If you are looking for major reshaping you have to consult your dentist and follow whatever he or she advices. If you are asked to wear braces you should immediately go for it. Even if you are not going for cosmetic dentistry it is advisable to visit orthodontics in case you are suffering from tooth decay or overcrowding. If these are not taken care of in time, you may suffer form toothache or even lose the teeth later. So, before you decide to get a pearly white smile make your teeth healthy.

What is the procedure to get admission in cosmetic dentistry in India?
Which are the colleges in India (pref Punjab) that have cosmetic dentistry courses? Is there any enterance test or any other criteria for admission?
I have done BDS.
Assuming that you are looking for a undergraduate course.
There is no undergraduate degree for cosmetic dentistry in India. And you can’t practice without a degree. A possible way forward would be to get a BDS Degree and then get a PG Diploma in cosmetic dentistry.
